Lutheran minister Henry Gerecke was fifty when he enlisted as an army chaplain during the Second World War.
At the war's end, when other soldiers were coming home, Gerecke was recruited for the most difficult engagement of his life: ministering to the twenty-one Nazi leaders awaiting trial at Nuremburg.
Based on scrupulous research and first-hand accounts, including interviews with still-living participants, Mission at Nuremberg takes us inside the Nuremburg Palace of Justice, into the cells of the accused and the courtroom where they faced their crimes.
As the drama leading to the court's final judgments unfolds, Townsend brings to life the developing relationship between Gerecke and Hermann Georing, Albert Speer, Wilhelm Keitel, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and other imprisoned Nazis as they awaited trial.

In the prologue of L P hartley's play, 'The Go-between', there is the comment, "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there." That saying sums up this book - a biography of Henry Gerecke, American Lutheran minister and Army Chaplain. The war is over and the Nuremburg trials of top Nazi war-criminals is about to begin when Gerecke receives his assignment to serve as Chaplain to the twenty-one imprisoned Nazi leaders awaiting trial. The book takes us right into the Palace of Justice, into the cells and into the lives of those men. Time townsend brings Gerecke's challenge to life - how was he to minister the Gospel to men who had orchestrated such atrocities? Here is not just a new history of the Nuremburg trials but a clear and concise examination of the last days of these men. Gerecke was a brave, sympathetic pastor with a strong conviction that the Gospel of Christ could provide answers and hope even in the darkest of circumstances. In a biography that is always detailed and well-researched, gripping and at times harrowing and emotional, Tim Townsend has shed new light on an aspect of the darkest days of twentieth century history which deserves a wide audience.
