Our culture actively battles against every aspect of Christian faith and living, and it's important to train and equip our children. Part of that is making sure they have knowledge and understanding but equally, we have to address their hearts, minds and spirits. Young people mostly don't want to "do church, they want to connect with a God who loves them. I don't mean abandon liturgy or abandon structure. I do mean recognize, actively seek and work with the Spirit and whatever He wants to do in our churches. Some will remain structured and liturgical and others may not. But we have to be willing to move. In teaching confirmation to mostly 6th graders, the catechism (book of things you need to know to function as a Christian) was a great guide, and it organized our classes but it was definitely not written with middle schoolers in mind. There were a lot of really good questions. We abandoned our agenda more weeks than not. Yeah, some of this is probably going to offend proper church-y adults. I don't think any of it is going to offend the people it's written for though, our children and our young adults. This book addresses the same areas that the catechism did, but also includes topics my class wanted to cover. These are intense times, and our children need to be trained up. Let's do this in a way that will engage them, and help them walk out their faith as mature, equipped and fierce Christians.
