This book is based on the tradition that Jesus is not only a spiritual Savior: He constantly heals physical illnesses. And the Church has always seen those healings as a sign of something deeper. As Matthew 9:12 mentions, Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Saint Augustine interpreted it as: "Christ is a humble and patient physician; He does not abandon the sick person even if He wounds him with the scalpel."
From those first centuries of Christianity, traditional prayers to the Divine Physician have been formed that are based on: 1) recognizing spiritual illness, 2) asking for forgiveness and purification, 3) asking for inner healing, 4) asking for physical healing if it be fitting for salvation, and 5) abandoning oneself to the will of God. These stages guide the soul to present itself before Christ with humility, faith, and trust, even in the midst of pain.
Inspired by this traditional devotion, and together with biblical quotations, traditional images of Jesus, and a healing novena, Prayers to Jesus the Divine Physician for Healing brings together supplications for those seeking consolation, strength, and hope. It is a prayer companion for times of illness, anxiety, or weariness, helping one to place the heart in the Lord's hands and to ask, with peace, for the grace to be healed within and without according to the love of God.
