      Product Description

How do you explain the inexplicable? This is a question which many Australians have asked themselves in the wake of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Why did church leaders move clergy? Do anything to evade responsibility? Engage in sex acts with children? What is the rational process that sits behind the decision to sexually abuse children? I don't think there are good explanations for this conduct, which seems completely at odds with any reading of Christian faith . Yet there are undoubtedly some themes which lie at the core - the "mysteries" inherent in "God's plan", themes of sacrifice and the benefits of suffering, the notion of Original Sin and the need for even innocent children to atone. This culture - along with enforced celibacy - appears to have created a hothouse environment for abuse. The question for Australians - and especially Australian Catholics - is, how do we prevent this from ever occurring again?
