WHERE YESTERDAY LIVES: Ellen Barrett is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist with an uncertain marriage, a forgotten faith, and haunting memories of her picturesque home town and the love she left behind. The eldest of five siblings, she longs for the time, long ago, when they were a happy family. Now Ellen’s beloved father is dead, and she returns to her childhood home to make peace–with the people who still live there, with the losses and changes that time has wrought, and with the future God has set before her.
WHEN JOY CAME TO STAY: Maggie Stovall is one of the golden people. She has it all together...at least on the surface. Ben Stovall is a godly husband and successful attorney. He has no idea of the darkness about to overtake his life. Amanda Joy is a child of society–abused, broken, thrown away. But her trust in God is still alive. When Joy Came to Stay is the heart-wrenching story of one woman’s descent into the shadows of depression, her husband’s search for understanding, and a precious child’s unwavering faith.
ON EVERY SIDE: Faith Evans is an up-and-coming newscaster, a woman of honor and integrity who must take a stand against the one man she never imagined would be her enemy. A beloved, hundred-year-old statue of Jesus stands in a small-town park–but some say it’s a clear violation of separation of church and state that must come down. Jordan Riley is a powerful attorney fighting for human rights and against God, but still reckoning with bitter boyhood losses. Amid political intrigue, social injustice, and personal conflicts, will love be enough when the battle rages on every side?

Eden Article: The Early Novels of Karen Kingsbury
Karen Kingsbury once said that she cries whenever she’s writing a novel. “Tears are good for us,” she said in interview, “Ice collects around the edges of our hearts. Tears happen when a little bit of that ice melts."
High up - possibly highest, in the best-selling inspirational fiction charts, Karen Kingsbury has written more than 50 novels in the life-changing fiction genre. Enthroned by Time magazine as the ‘Queen of Christian Fiction’, Karen is perhaps most famous for her emotionally gripping Bailey Flanagan and Baxter Family multi-novel sagas, and her story, Dandelion Dust, released as a family DVD movie (find it by typing Eden number 3968291 into the ‘what are you looking for today?’ window).
Now with over 20 million books in print, Karen has won multiple awards for her work with many of her books adapted for film and television. She keeps a good interaction going with her readers, and lives in Nashville with her husband and their six children. Three of her family are children were adopted from Haiti, and Karen is the founder and front-woman for the adoption support charity ‘The One Chance Foundation’. Her long running series titles include the ever popular Redemption novels, the Sunrise and the Firstborn series, and others beyond the Baxter and Flannigan family sagas, such as her September 11 trilogy; her spiritual response to the events of 9/11.
This compilation, The Karen Kingsbury Collection takes established Kingsbury readers back to Karen’s earliest writings and introduces new devotees of faith inspired fiction to the author’s roots within the genre. Karen’s first novel – and a feature of this collection, Where Yesterday Lives, was a real challenge for Karen to get published. Publishers liked the story, but since it didn’t contain foul language or sex scenes, they faound it hard to place. Finally, Christian publishing house Multnomah took it on and signed her up for more books contract.
This first novel is set in the publishing world that Karen knew even before finding her calling in faith inspired fiction. Before becoming a novelist, she worked as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times. She’d used her experience to pen a fiction, Missy’s Murder, based on a true story and sold a version of the story to People magazine in 1989. A New York agent read her story and the book hit stores in 1992. After three more true crime novels under her pen-name, Kelsey Tyler, she left the shady world of crime fiction to compile four collections of answered prayers and miracle stories.
In 1998, Karen created Where Yesterday Lives and her fictional heroine, Ellen Barrett, a thirty-one year old Pulitzer prize-winning journalist with an uncertain marriage, forgotten faith, and haunting memories. When tragedy strikes, Ellen must return to her childhood home where an avalanche of memories is unleashed. Ellen’s search for reconciliation with God as well as with her friends and family is a feature of the Kingsbury style.
Also included in this compilation is When Joy Came To Stay. Written 2 years after her first Christian novel, Karen tackles the falsehood we build around ourselves for protection, but which inevitably becomes a prison. New heroine, Maggie Stovall, is trapped inside the persona she's spent years creating. But the truth about who she is and what she's done is about to come bursting to the surface. Whether she sinks, floats or flies free will depend on the closest people in her life: Ben Stovall, her godly husband and successful attorney. And Amanda Joy, abused, broken and thrown away but with her trust in God still very much alive. Ultimate honesty is the theme of this story about a woman’s search for love on both sides of the heavenly divide.
The most recent of the trio of stand-alone-novels is her 2001 story, On Every Side, is a powerful novel of love, loss, conflict and restoration. Jordan Riley replaces the love he’s lost with anger until Faith Evans, an up-and-coming newscaster begins to disassemble the walls around Jordan’s fortress heart. What she doesn’t realize is that they have a history, and Faith, a woman of integrity finds herself making a stand against the one man she never imagined would be her enemy. The third player in this triangle is a hundred year old statue of Jesus Christ that stands in the park in Bethany, Pennsylvania. A statue that suddenly becomes the focus of a bitter conflict.
This Karen Kingsbury Collection is more than the revival of a piece of Christian fiction history, a nostalgic revisiting of novels more than decade old. It’s the retracing of three first steps on a journey toward maturity for one of the finest craftswomen of faith based romance. To re-read these stories is to begin to understand why Karen cries when she writes, and to appreciate why it’s important that these stories move hearts in the way that they do. Together these stories form a solid introduction to readers who love romantic fiction, but haven’t considered any deeper, spiritual significance. This collection will show them exactly what they’ve been missing. – Les Ellison
Story Behind the Book: A word from Karen Kingsbury
“Each of my novels is a piece of my heart. Where Yesterday Lives was my first-ever novel, and as such it is somewhat autobiographical. The childhood story of Ellen Barrett, her love for her parents and siblings, is my story–though her current story and struggles are fictional. On Every Side sheds light on the struggle for religious freedom in today’s climate, something I am passionate about. Finally, When Joy Came to Stay is the story of one woman’s battle against depression and the secrets of her past.” - Karen Kingsbury
