Good fiction can tackle questions in ways that other authors and speakers struggle to do. The Pawn is an American thriller in the style of CSI and Patricia Cornwell that does just that to effect – the question here being when does evil start and good stop? Is motivation a real excuse? Does the end really justify the means if the detective breaks the law? The strength of Steven James’ book is that it doesn’t preach, instead it takes the reader on a roller coaster ride where the detective’s daughter is in danger. One where he will do anything to protect her. While this book is a page turner it is not a comfortable to read – while I am not a parent can I either condone or condemn the hero’s actions? The Pawn does not give easy answers, but challenges us to consider our behaviour in a world which lacks moral certainties.

I recently purchased The Pawn along with The Rook. My question is....has anyone at Eden read this book? I bought it thinking that it would be a christian book. It's horrific. Very graffic in explaining 'how to slice people up...'. There was no mention of God. Since I have brought various book from Eden in the past, I was very disappointed and felt quite sick with this book. I would have thought that the material you sell, being a christian company, would have been reviewed first. Is there a way I can have my money back?
Christian Fiction is a category you found in christian bookshops around the world and The Pawn is available in many of them. The category will contain books that are not obviiously 'christian' in their theme but are written by well known Christian authors.
You are not alone in your view that this book is horrifc and too graphic. However there is a subtle and underlying theme which is developed in the next two books in the series. It may be the case that this author actually intends to draw on a non-christian audience, who are more interested in this genre, and to introduce them to christian ideas through a development of the story in the other books in the series.
With over 100,000 christian books in publication (and several thousand new books every month) it is not practical for any bookseller to have read, rated or reviewed them which is why we encourage anyone who buys a book from us to add their review to the website for everyone to see to guide them in their own selection.
