Andy Andrews: I’m so excited about this Bible, I’ve actually seen several pages from it - because they sent it to me, I printed it out and I said to Polly, “So different from anything I’ve ever seen. How did this Bible come about in the first place?
Gloria Gaither: Well honestly it wasn’t our idea, several of the people in this room sort of chorused it, I think, and first we said: we’re not theologians. And all the Homecoming artists said, “Well I can’t write a commentary on the Bible.” And then we got together and listened to what they all had in mind, and it was just regular people telling where scripture hits the road for them – where the tyre hits the pavement [tarmac]. I keep thinking about… that we overcome by the Word of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. And I think for regular people – and we’re all vary regular people, saying what the Word of God has done in a regular day is what you [Andy] were talking about – telling the truth. I think there's power in that.
Andy Andrews: I’m going to be talking to people and telling everybody that I know somebody who wrote the Bible. But reading some of it - I read some of the commentary that you [Gloria] wrote, and some of the commentary that you [Bill] wrote, and some of the commentary that I think Becky Isaacs wrote; is that a lifetime of living - because you see things differently? That’s how I make my mark – that I see things that other people don’t see. And when I’m around you guys you see things other people don’t see, you hear things other people don’t hear, and I think that’s what’s going to be of huge value in this Bible. I mean how did you decide which commentaries to do, and which are you going to assign to other people?
Gloria Gaither: You ask how we assigned, we didn’t assign - and that was driving the editorial staff crazy. We just said to the other artists: ‘would you write some real life experiences here?’ I mean, consider we’re not Andy Andrews, right, we’re not great writers. I mean everybody said, ‘I don’t know, if I can write for the Bible, And we said, ‘Yes, if the Bible has crossed your trail, just tell us that. There is something wonderful about what’s happening as we do this Bible which is so real. Mixed in that are something that have outlive us all, that help us .I mean do you go to people who have outlived you when you’re writing a book. I mean do you fill up on Shakespeare or Longfellow to inform your writing? We find that as songwriters we go to the old hymns. We go to great lyrics, we go to poetry. We sing, ‘So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross’ we all have to find somebody smarter than us –
Bill Gaither: Than we -
Gloria Gaither: Than we… are,
Andy: This is what happens when you get two English teachers together.
Gloria Gaither: This isn’t a Bible of authorities telling us how we should think, this is a bible confessing how the Bible has informed very, very regular everyday decisions.
Bill Gaither: I think what drew me was the power of the poetry, the power of the drama of the gospel and most of the time it found its way into a song. And when I got to college and found out about all the different philosophies of the world I said, ‘hey, cool’ but the thing that drew me was the mystic presence that drew me into the mystic presence of Jesus that somehow found its way into a gospel a song.
Andy: Let me ask you something that I think a l;to of us would like to hear.. If you [Gloria] could choose one thing that he has done, one thing that he has written one thing you’d be most proud of, one this that he has done… and if you Bill, could look at Gloria’s body of work -
Bill Gaither: I’m glad you didn’t say Gloria’s body!
Andy: …I’ll be the funny one. I’m always amazed at Bill and Gloria… and I’m just curious what you think about each other and you think is his best and what you think is her best.
Gloria Gaither: I think Bill’s best gift is to sense a hole that needs to be filled. And I think that’s what’s motivated our writing… we’re always in a service someplace we’re in a context or a movie maybe, and he says, ‘I think there should be a song for that,’ and there isn’t one… There isn’t really a word in professional music for what he does. He calls it programming but it’s more than that… he is able to take what any one artist does and put it in a platinum setting so that we are all better together than we are separately and he weaves a whole evening. And it doesn’t work very well with people that want to be stars… It doesn’t work with agents… with artists who say they’ve got get their latest song out, or got to have 20 minutes… but if they laid down their lives and their talents and don’t demand a certain thing, that what t will happen will be better than they thought… That’s what he does.
Andy: I’m not trying to be funny when I say this, but the only person I can compare him to is Johnny Carson. he was not the funniest comedian you ever saw but, boy, he made everyone so much better. And no one has filled that hole on television since he’s gone…
Bill Gaither: You know what, next time I’m in town, I’m going to buy a ticket and go see myself.
Andy: So what about her, Bill?
Bill Gaither: She’s a genius… but she has the great ability of focusing the idea. A preacher has 40 – 45 minutes to develop an idea but a songwriter has four or five minutes to take it and take it home somewhere. I could talk all night about songs, but quickly, what I want to say to her is that it takes a skilful peson to hone it down into just a few words. When you think of the power of a simple song like, “We Shall Overcome,” wasn’t a whole lot of words but it was a song that took the audience somewhere… But the ability to distil a song down into just a few seconds - We have a song ‘It is finished’ But what does it mean on Monday and Tuesday when we go to work with a guy we really don’t like, but I have to show up everyday with some kind of good attitude? So in her brains she came up with this: ‘Yet in my heart the battle was still raging, not all the prisoners of war had come home. These were battlefields of my own making, I didn’t know that the war had been won…”
So I hope that the discourses we have in this Bible, people will read the crucifixion story and realise there is more for them every day… for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Let me tell you that Gloria and I are totally overwhelmed by this… we only set out to write a little song… You give us a lot more credit than what we deserve, but to be honoured like this – for a major company to take their resources and the words I heard – this is going to be a major thrust for this spring. I said, ‘are you serious?’ We’ve been in the music field for most of our lives; I asked Gloria the other day, I said, ‘Honey, did you ever think in your wildest dreams that we would ever be in a place like this? To which she said, “Honey, you were never in my wildest dreams.”

“A thing of beauty is joy for ever,” so the saying goes, and the Gaither Homecoming Bible is certainly that. And why not? The Bible is already a joy to own and read, why not make it beautiful too? The days of drab covered Bibles containing nothing to help you read, understand and apply the message of God’s Word have largely gone – with the exception, perhaps, of pocket Bibles for travel and giveaway testaments for mission. Today new and experienced Bible readers want and even expect joy and beauty to go together.
Of course, the Bible must be first and foremost just that – the Bible. The Homecoming Bible uses the full text of the New King James Version. A translation with a direct heritage to the King James (KJV) of 1611, but made more relevant and readable for today’s audiences, young and older. This is edition is exceptionally well printed in solid text and a ‘font size’ of 11 points. That’s about the same as any popular ‘large print’ Bible, and easy on the eye with its ‘serif’ style letters. Laid out in two column style, the length of line is easy to follow, and the footnotes easy to find and relate to the text.
This is a commentary Bible of a most unusual and helpful kind. Not only are their thoughts from the wisest and most experienced of Christians teachers and preachers, there are also personal reflections and recollections from Homecoming artists with a lifetime’s experience of serving the gospel in song. From these standpoints you get a breadth and depth of the gospel message in theory, music and practical application. But most of all, this Bible is beautiful. Printed in lively colour, there are memorable selected texts in highlight panels. There are whole page poems in coloured borders of the quality you’d expect to find in a framed mount. There are colour pictures of the contributors and many pages are bordered with dramatic landscapes, pastel floral images or glowing sky and seascapes demonstrating the glory of God’s creation.
For the bedside or coffee table, there few Bibles so inviting to pick up and leaf through or read in depth. As a gift, especially for followers of the Gaither Homecoming brand of gospel revival music, there are few more likely to be so well received. This Bible sets a new standard in themed, gift and presentation Bibles for those whose music is connected to their faith, and their faith built on their Bible. – Les Ellison
The Homecoming Bible is in some ways a departure from the Gaithers main stock in trade, that of reviving and revitalising good old fashioned gospel music singing. In other ways it’s natural progression, but at its heart it’s simply a return to the roots of everything the well loved couple have striven to do in the last half decade. It’s the foundation on which their lives, music and marriage is built. It’s no more than doing what we all do with our Bible; we wrap it in something of value, we add things of personal connection to us and our lives, and we share it with those we love. That, in a nutshell, is what the Homecoming Bible is all about.
Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Homecoming brand of tent revival gospel singing is one the most recognisable and most enduring in Christian music live performance, CD and DVD recording. Selling more than 1 million live performance tickets worldwide, in 2004 Gaither Homecoming events outsold concerts by Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart. Yet this global gospel music phenomena had the most humble of beginnings.
Listening to the radio in his father’s barn, Bill Gaither took up the passion and style of Southern gospel singers such as Jake Hess and the Goodmans – who with many others would feature in the Homecoming revival movement. Born 1936 in Alexandria, Indiana, Bill Gaither formed his first vocal band – The Bill Gaither Trio whilst still at college in 1956. The Trio lined up Bill alongside his brother Danny and sister, Mary Ann, beginning the strong family character of the Gaither Homecoming sound.
Bill’s music couldn’t support him as a full time singer. In 1959 he took up a post teaching English. In 1962, Bill married fellow teacher Gloria Sickal. Combining their teaching careers with singing, song writing, recording and publishing, their breakthrough came in with ‘He Touched Me’ recorded in 1964. Musical success set Bill and Gloria free to move out of teaching and into Christian music ministry as their fulltime commitment from 1967. As well as singing alongside her husband, Gloria’s song and devotional writing spans a range of subjects from social commentary to academic reviews, with a special interest in the works of John Steinbeck.
Serving on the Board of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, and the United Christian College Fund, Gloria Gaither maintains an extensive schedule of public speaking and advocacy. With 700 gospel songs, 8 Grammys, more than twenty Dove Awards and 8 Gospel Music Songwriter of the Year titles, Bill and Gloria Gaither still manage the whole Gaither Music Company of Alexandria from Bill’s Indiana hometown. After decades of music ministry, Bill still insists, “Our calling is not just to make music… but communicating the reality of Christ.” A father figure to many younger performers, Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Homecoming brand of gospel revival music includes many artists they listened to on the radio of their youth.
Gaither Homecoming tours started in 1991 bringing together major stars of the Southern gospel scene and sparking a revival of the genre. Homecoming tours travel all through the US and internationally, including events in London, Sydney, Jerusalem and South Africa. Now in their seventies, Bill and Gloria and the top of their game and breathing new life into the Southern gospel style worldwide. “If we have done anything right over the years,” says Bill Gaither, “I hope we have built bridges where people could connect with God and with each other. That is what started us writing and what will keep us going for the rest of our lives.” – Les Ellison
