The Wisdom of the Cross
Full Product Description
This stimulating volume argues for, and undertakes, a more coherent reading of the letter, in the hope of providing a more compelling and theologically rich interpretation and a clearer apprehension of its relevance to the church today.
Brian Rosner begins by putting the case for a holistic approach to studying the theology and ethics of 1 Corinthians. The following nine chapters cover, first, Karl Barth’s classic treatment, which underscores the letter’s coherence (Keith Condie); next, the major topics of holiness (Bill Salier), the cross (Philip Kern), sexual ethics (Roy Ciampa), spiritual gifts (David Peterson), eschatology (Bruce Winter), ethics (Michael Jensen), and the glory of God (Matthew Malcolm); and, finally, preaching 1 Corinthians (Brian Rosner). The chapters cohere around the themes of Paul’s pastoral practice and the wisdom of the cross of Jesus.
The volume, based on the 2010 Moore College School of Theology, reflects the contributors’ common interest in theological interpretation that acknowledges the text as the word of God and seeks to serve the interests of the contemporary church.
The Wisdom of the Cross by Brian S Rosner (Ed) was published by Apollos in September 2011 and is our 44669th best seller. The ISBN for The Wisdom of the Cross is 9781844745487.

The Wisdom of the CrossJohnny Douglas, via The Good Book Stall
1 Corinthians often reads as a messy, diverse, reactionary pastoral sortie for a complex people in a remote time. Brian Rosner brings us a stimulating volume that is coherent, clear as well as faithful in its rich theological interpretation of the church then, for the church today. The theology and ethics underpinning Paul’s wisdom for Corinth is particularly strong and of the greatest help.
The lens of holiness, relevance, gifts, eschatology, ethics, sexuality, glory and communication are all covered, consistently tracked to the mystery of the cross of Christ. There is great scholarship, cultural and scriptural exegesis with practical matters well explained.
This deserves wide readership and regular reference use.

'This is an excellent corrective to the view that 1 Corinthians is a rag-bag of assorted themes, with the contributors making a powerful cumulative case for the letter as a tightly focused unity. The chapters interact skilfully both with current scholarship and with contemporary culture, making this collection an important volume both for scholars and preachers.'
Simon Gathercole, Senior Lecturer in New Testament, Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, and Editor, Journal for the Study of the New Testament
‘I warmly commend this book. It combines theology, exegesis and practical issues in an eminently careful and very readable way. ... It deserves a wide readership.’
Anthony Thiselton, University of Nottingham, author of The First Epistle to the Corinthians (NIGTC)
