Wildflowers of TerezinMary Bartholomew, via The Good Book Stall
If you are not old enough to remember World War 2 it might be a good idea to read the Afterword, at the end of the book, first. Robert Elmer has woven this love story around faithfully reproduced incidents of Danish resistance to their Nazi invaders and the Danes support of their persecuted Jewish neighbours. Yes, this is fiction and Steffen, the Lutheran pastor and Hanne, the Jewish nurse are figments of the authors imagination but as you read you can feel the strained atmosphere in Denmark and the terror of the deported Jews: it is such a relief that there is a happy ending to this particular story.
