What To Look For In a PastorAlan Hill, via The Good Book Stall
Choosing a new pastor is probably the most important decision that a church makes, yet many churches have little idea about how to undertake this process. This welcome book provides straightforward, sound advice. The book is aimed at pastoral search committees but all members would benefit from reading it.
The first 5 chapters concentrate on the type of man that the church should be looking for. What is so good about this book is that the author explores the issues behind the points that he makes. It is worth reading just for his discussion on the nature of expository preaching. In the chapter entitled ‘Where is his theology in practice?’ the author also provides an excellent summary of the doctrine of the sovereignty of God and man’s responsibility for sin.
The last chapter (which actually should be the first) gives helpful advice on the actual process including who should sit on the pastoral search committee and what should be the role of the rest of the church.
There are a few weaknesses in this book. It is based on the American church scene, so the description of the different kinds of evangelical churches is less relevant to churches in other countries. I would have liked some discussion about the importance a prospective pastor places on evangelism and preaching the Gospel. The doctrinal basis included in the book is pre-millennial. However these are minor points that do not detract from the overall helpfulness of this book.
