Description
The prize for this year's most engaging new Christmas selection from one of the famous university choirs has to go to "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel". This is the appropriate title for the recording debut of The Chapel Choir of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The Advent carol Veni, Veni, Emmanuel also opens a beautiful and carefully selected programme of 24 carols that retells the Christmas story from the first announcement through to the New Year (Britten's lovely piece). The choice spans the centuries from the 1400s to the present day, and includes many popular favourites such as Once in Royal David's city, Ding dong merrily on high, We Three Kings of Orient are and an exquisite, guitar accompanied, Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Among many other highlights are Berlioz' enchanting Shepherds' Farewell, and John Rutter's luscious setting of What sweeter music?
Under the musical directorship of Timothy Prosser, the choir gives first-rate performances that will add to its fast-growing reputation. An excellent addition to mid-price White Line's Christmas list.
