There Was a GardenNick Horton, via The Good Book Stall
I have on my shelves a collection of Eddie Askew’s books of meditations illustrated by his paintings and drawings, published in aid of The Leprosy Mission. On his death, Jenny Hawke, his daughter, found the uncompleted manuscript for this book and was moved to finish it in the way she imagined her father would have wished. From reading some of this book, it would appear that his genes for writing and art have been passed on in very good measure indeed to Jenny. A number of devices have been used to make it clear who has written what in the book – Eddie’s writing appearing in black, Jenny’s in blue and pages which contain the work of both of them printed on a slightly cream tint of paper. Rather than creating a disharmony, I found that this all added greatly to my appreciation of the book: I was not fazed at all by slightly different turns of hand, since it was easy to identify the hand in question.
The meditations take us through some of the examples of Garden in the Bible’s pages – from Eden, through the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Garden of Gethsemane to the Garden Tomb. For those of us who like a theme to run through our meditations, this book will be both a delight and a treasury.
Very highly recommended.
