The PromiseDeborah Reynolds, via The Good Book Stall
First published 1980.
This book is a terrific read, a great literary work, a classic, describing the events of the first five books of the Bible. It does not claim to be yet another Bible translation but instead, Keith Ward writes with huge descriptive power and imagination in re-telling the stories of the people and unfolding dramas of the Pentateuch. In doing so he really brings events and characters alive and also succeeds in drawing out and giving insight into some of the deeper spiritual significant themes.
For example, as I read the story of Abraham’s encounter with the three strangers I became more aware of how life was on the land at that time as well as being led to think afresh about Abraham’s relationship with God as he interacted with the strangers. Very helpfully, the Bible references are printed alongside each section.
The only downside is that this is one of these books which booksellers will find hard to know where to put it in the shop. Should it be by the Bibles – yet it isn’t one. Would biography be a better section for perhaps the customer who needs some introduction to the lives of e.g. Adam, Jacob and Moses. Hmmm, maybe fiction would be a better section……..
Wherever it is put, assuredly, this is a ‘good read’.
