Strange GodsMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
Strange Gods is an excellent book that looks at the various "gods" we worship, be they time, money, sex or one of my personal favourites the "idea". Scalia is a well respected blogger known as The Anchoress at a site called Patheos.com and the easy style of blog follows through here in this book, a personal tone that has a semi-contemplative air to it making it easy to read and digest. Yet for all that easy style there is much content here and some real insights and questions of note. The sections in this book really do dig at how we come to make idols of meaningless things and how it happens almost without our notice, and more importantly how often these things arise not from our badness, not from meaning to sin, but rather sometimes from our meaning to do good... It's a brilliant book that should appeal to many and is certainly worth reading and could even make a great basis for a series of group studies or talks.
