Soul Survivor Pb
Soul Survivor Pb by Philip Yancey was published by Hodder & Stoughton in November 2007 and is our 13408th best seller. The ISBN for Soul Survivor Pb is 9780340954782.
Overexposed to the distortions and hypocrisies of Christian churches, Philip Yancey set out in search of a life enhanced by faith instead of diminished by religion. Having struggled to forge personal convictions about God amid the ironies of life and the incongruities of religion, he looks closer at those whose lives radiate spiritual authenticity rather than pious posturing. From John Donne to Martin Luther King, Dostoevsky to Mahatma Gandhi, G K Chesterton to Henri Nouwen, Yancey pays homage to some of the most remarkable, selfless, Christ-like lives our world has known, and asks what both he and we can do to find such beautiful faith in our own lives. Soul Survivor's Preface covers Yancey's personal experience of the September 11 tragedy and his subsequent visit to Ground Zero, which once again prompted a searing spiritual self-examination.

How My Faith Survived the Church - Juliette Gosling from Rochester who loves reading
I love the sub-title to this book - whatever issues might be going on in your local church this book pushes that aside and gets to the heart of living a life of faith. Yancey looks at the stories of 13 people whose lives have shaped his Christian growth (despite the doubts he had about his own church at the time). From Martin Luther King Jr to Paul Brand (pioneering Leprosy surgeon) - the two best chapters for me. This book has really helped me at a crucial time in my faith. The chapters have provided a really helpful summary of the characters without the need to read entire books on each individual. I would strongly recommend this book.
A very ordinary academic - Sue, needing all the help she can get, near Windsor
Just love authors like Yancey who deal with their own experiences with honesty and wit, using great historical (and maybe not so old...) theories to find their way through the battles. Giving us ordinary mortals permission to feel all of the frustrations with the established church in a consumer culture, while providing tools to meet them head on and not feel alone in doing so.
