Sacred MysteriesJohn Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
Christopher Howse has assembled in this very enjoyable book a selection from his popular Saturday columns in the Daily Telegraph. In over a hundred short pieces he explores the human face of religion, Christian, Jewish, Moslem and of other worshippers of a divinity. The articles focus on the surprising, the peculiar, the amusing, the rituals that have survived for centuries but whose origins are lost or inexplicable, what the author calls “rummaging through ancient curiosities.” He reveals the religious life of mankind to be multi-faceted and always fascinating. There is a particulary interesting introduction which says a lot that is relevant for worshippers today. This is a book that is hard to put down, great for dipping into, and perfect for the bedside.
