Running ScaredPhelim McIntyre, via The Good Book Stall
I must admit that I have never been one for biographies or autobiographies. Listening to a lot of people's stories in counselling and life coaching puts you off reading these types of books in your leisure time. Even so I am pleased I read Running Scared.
In many ways, this is a Boys Own adventure story. A cop, who commits a crime and then goes on the run, becomes a fugitive. He survives by developing backwoods survival skills that would impress Ray Mears and Bear Grylls. All the while God sends people across the author's path until, after 22 years on the run, he turns to God and faces the consequences of the past 30 years including his time as a corrupt cop and the rape and subsequent arrest that led to him running.
What let's the book down is the abruptness of the ending. After turning himself in, Robert Leon Davis recounts the amazing short sentence he received and touches on the work that he does now. He also briefly runs over the issue of getting back in touch with the children he had fathered as a fugitive and the children getting to know about each other. All this in under eight pages. This time must have been tough, out of nowhere a brother, who people may have thought of as dead, appeared. There was the emotional cost of getting to know each other again, the emotions of finally going to court and hearing the sentence, then the relief at the sentence - all of which is sped over as if unimportant. The last two chapters of “reflections” seem to be tagged on and unnecessary. Even so, it is a book that will catch the attention of teenage boys and young adults, if you can get them to read it that is.
