Description
In the last third of the twentieth century English evangelicalism experienced a period of intense ferment. Rival forms of evangelicalism rose to successive prominence as evangelicals defied the dominant trend of escalating church decline. Conservatives and progressives, charismatics and entrepreneurs developed diverse experiments in evangelical identity and made widely differing claims for the movement’s future. Evangelicals championed both generous orthodoxy and sectarian exclusivity. They enjoyed genuine growth, but some indulged in hype and unreality.Richly grounded in empirical data and interviews with many senior evangelicals, this study explores these trends and develops new insights into the increasing diversity, conflicting identities and relative durability of the evangelical tradition. Intriguing developments of recent evangelical history are set within the context of a close textual analysis of evangelical bases of faith over the past 150 years. This demonstrates major theological transitions; during the late twentieth century evangelicals became both more fundamentalist and more progressive. The book also includes ground-breaking case studies of the most prominent forms of entrepreneurial evangelicalism, notably the Evangelical Alliance, Spring Harvest and Alpha.
Warner provides an authoritative theological analysis and a constructive sociological critique. This is an invaluable study for all those - in the academy, the church and wider society - who want a fuller understanding of the social and religious significance and the evolutionary dynamics of this influential and diversifying religious tradition.
