Protestant Art in the Duchy of Pomerania, 1535-1685

Full Product Description

Situated on the shifting border between Poland and Germany, the Duchy of Pomerania has for centuries been a disputed region both in terms of politics and religion. During the Reformation, the region was an early supporter of Luther and the reformed religion in a region fractured by political, denominational and dynastic rivalries. This fluid geopolitical situation ensured that, despite local Lutheran hegemony, Pomerania was exposed to the cultural influences of her neighbours, both catholic and protestant. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the study of Pomeranian religious art and architecture. For the first time in English, this book provides a detailed survey of protestant art in this fascinating central European state. Utilizing documents and surveying artefacts from over 150 Pomeranian churches, it analysises the iconographic programmes of ecclesiastical architecture and furnishings, and sets them within the doctrinal and devotional contexts of the period c.1530-1680. By viewing such features as altarpieces, fonts, organ-casings, benches, epitaphs, paintings and pulpits against the rites of the Lutheran liturgy, and comparing them with those of surrounding countries and larger European powers, many surprizing conclusions are drawn. In particular, it is argued that influences were not only international, but often cross-confessional, with Rubens, the Jesuits and traditional local medieval customs providing inspiration for church decoration, alongside the more familiar protestant influences. Beginning with a chronological history of the Pomeranian church, before moving on to a close study of church art and decoration, this book offers a fascinating study not only of a neglected European duchy, but also into the processes of the dissemination of iconographic ideas across, time, space and confession. As such it will prove invaluable for anyone interested in the exchange and flow of religious and cultural capital within the tumultuous era of the Reformation, Thirty Year's War and Treaty of Westphalia.
