Preaching With a PlanAlan Hill, via The Good Book Stall
Professor Gibson has written this book to encourage preachers to plan their preaching. He believes (rightly) that preaching is a key part of how believers grow in their spiritual walk and that such a task requires a planned programme.
The opening chapter on the purpose of preaching is useful. I liked his point that the spiritual state of our hearers should shape our sermons and also his suggestions as to how to tell where your congregation is spiritually. I appreciated his comments about the challenges preachers face.
However the book left me unsatisfied. There is little practical help in developing a programme with only one paragraph discussing which Bible book to preach on and when. There was nothing about the need to regularly preach evangelistic sermons. Some readers will also find it disconcerting that he refers to the preacher as she as well as he.
However Professor Gibson’s book does tackle an important subject. This book will stimulate preachers to think more about their preaching programme but you may need to look elsewhere for help in how to develop such a programme.
