Not prayer but theology - Patrick, a fisherman in Scotland.

This was not what I expected at all. The introduction to this edition says that it ought to be titled 'Theology: A New Encounter', and I would certainly agree with that. I don't know how it plays as theology, but as prayer I think it is wrong at so many levels it's hard to know where to start. In particular, it's a prime example of putting the cart before the horse - Thornton starts from the type of worship he thinks people want and then tries to find ways to justify it theologically, rather than starting from what he thinks is true and working from that to appropriate prayer. Also, the more often he reiterates 'I believe in the creed', the harder it is to escape the suspicion that he really wants to reduce God to an abstraction (the absurd 'Being-lets-Be', whatever that means). One for academics only.
