The Polkinghorne ReaderTim Leffler, via The Good Book Stall
John Polkinghorne is probably one of science’s most pre-eminent and coherent theologians and theology’s most pre-eminent and coherent scientist – a ‘vegetarian butcher’ as Oord puts it. Few are able, let alone willing to live and work effectively in both camps that since enlightenment times have expended significant amounts of energy and writing to vilify or disprove the other’s relevance. As professor of mathematical physics and a teaching career in Cambridge University and the USA he has been able to engage with the most talented of today’s scientists yet as priest and Canon Theologian at Liverpool Cathedral he has engaged with the spiritual needs of ordinary folk.
As author of many books, Polkinghorne has challenged opposing sides to see the coherence, relevance and consistency of belief in both the Christian God and modern sciences but the scope and extent of his work is a challenge to read. TJ Oord has managed to masterfully craft what he and Polkinghorne perceive to be the best excerpts of Polkinghorne's works to create a synoptic work of the vast spread of subjects covered by this engaging author. Oord has produced a book that has a near seamless flow, cross matching works from different books and time periods to recreate a work that can engage anyone with a scientific mind who seeks to find its relevance in an engagement with God.
