Description
Chapels and sea caves, mountains and cathedrals, retreat centres and holy islands… Britain provides a breadth of Christian landscape perhaps unsurpassed in the world. Some places are well known, the destinations of ancient pilgrimage trails. Others are seldom visited, yet still identified with men and women who lived their faith boldly.
From Coventry Cathedral to St Margaret’s Chapel at the heart of Edinburgh Castle, from C.S. Lewis’s Oxford to T.S. Eliot’s Little Gidding, this book ranges across England, Scotland and Wales as it chronicles places where-in the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning-‘Earth’s crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God’. Each chapter is prefaced by an evocative black and white photograph.
David Douglas heads the charity Waterlines, which provides drinking water to rural communities in developing countries. He has written extensively for religious and environmental magazines and also wrote Wilderness Sojourn: Notes in the Desert Silence (Harper, 1987). Deborah Douglas is a trained spiritual director who has led retreats in the USA and Britain. Her writing on prayer has appeared in many magazines and she has also written The Praying Life: Finding God in All Things (Morehouse, 2003).
