A Pilgrim in SpainPaul Scott, via The Good Book Stall
Christopher Howse has spent many years exploring Spain. This book takes the reader from north of Santiago de Compostela to Soria in the west and Toledo in the south, observing the nuances and foibles of a people shaped by that same stone that underpins their beliefs. We find an old tobacconist, unshaven, struggling to total the cost of stamps, but who still wraps them painstakingly. Later we are shown the Escorial as it used to be, solemn yet defined by the number of its windows.
Howse refers to the notes of other c19 travellers like Richard Ford and G E Street, including providentially the latter’s illustrations. He recounts the expulsion of Jews in 1492 and Spain’s own Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1830s. He describes the patterns of ancient iron grills, and shows the door by a cathedral behind which the cork platforms worn by its women to raise them above the dirt of the street were intricately fashioned. He expresses St Teresa of Avila’s struggle to establish her new reformed foundation, one through which she found a fellow spirit in St John of the Cross, whose own shocking incarceration we, all unprepared, stumble upon.
So we end up at glorious Santiago, having been swept along by Howse’s curiosity, his obvious love of Spain and those past inhabitants, as those of today, resting in its shaded corners. It is a carefully written book that does not require previous knowledge of the country, but paints it with devotion and sympathy. I recommend it without hesitation.
