Paul and ScriptureChris Moore, via The Good Book Stall
In recent years there has been increasing attention paid to the way in which the New Testament authors made use of the scriptures handed on to them. This has been a fruitful field of research, and Professor Moyise's is both a welcome addition to the books available on the subject as well as a good introduction for those unaware of the issues.
After an introductory chapter, Moyise takes a thematic approach to Paul's writings, and concludes with a chapter outlining different contemporary views of quite how Paul utilises Scripture. Many examples are given throughout, as well as brief explanations of significant phrases or concepts. There is no assumption that the reader has prior knowledge of the debates and the writing throughout is clear.
Since the scope of the book includes discussion of topics such as the 'New Perspective', the Law, Gentiles and the role of the Spirit in the church it is fair to say that this book serves as a good primer on Pauline theology as a whole. At 126 pages it is a quick read, and the appendices help the reader to engage more deeply with the issues.
In summary, this a good book for any looking to deepen their understanding of Paul, and the links between the earliest church and the Judaism from which they grew.
