On Being SavedBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
Rod Garner admits his discomfort with the “skewed” theology of the Collect for Ash Wednesday, choosing to substitute the word ‘unworthiness’ for the word ‘wretchedness’, and encouraging his ministerial colleagues to do the same. Wretchedness alone will “simply not do” as the measure of what we are and might become. ‘Unworthy’, yes, but “part of the misery of Christianity has arisen out of its failure, or refusal to view the world in a positive light.” While he recognises that “we live in a world with ‘ragged edges’” and that there is a ‘doubleness’ (a favourite word of his – “The human heart is a repository of light and lies”) that “defines us and thwarts our best aspirations” - That’s what makes a gospel of redemption necessary - Garner asserts that there is much good in the most ordinary human lives. “True religion must learn to speak to people in their strengths, hopes and possibilities, and not only as, sadly, too often happens, in their weakness, loss or the presumption of their wretchedness.” Without, so far as I can see, defining redemption, he does explore its meaning from several different angles, among them the Cross and suffering (“The Christian pilgrim has a cross-shaped faith and is called to share in the suffering of Christ”, though “not all suffering is redemptive or has a persuasive answer”), memory (“a precious and redemptive faculty”), beauty, laughter and hope.
Redemption, which is about grace and the loving wisdom of God, is a human as well as a divine activity. Garner calls us to hold all things dear, recognising that all that lives is in some sense sacred, and asking for our “allegiance, respect and commitment”. As partners with God, redemption is our “sacred task” and calls for our commitment to wholeness. “This is what our hours and days are for: the graced opportunities to repair the world, piece by piece, peace by peace.” I enjoyed reading this book, and commend it to you.
