For the past three years, Keith Getty has been involved in writing new hymns for the church. At the centre of the renewed interest in hymnwriting are hymns such as In Christ Alone, co-written by Keith and Stuart Townend, now sung around the world by churches, choirs and artists alike.

Keith has been involved in church music since his early teens and after studying music at university began developing a career internationally as a composer/producer. During these years while travelling, he was very influenced by worshipping in churches of diverse backgrounds. He also began to write songs for services at his local church in Belfast where pastors had encouraged Keith to meet a need for more hymnlike material.

In 2001 Keith joined forces with Kingsway Music where he was introduced to Stuart Townend. Their first attempt at a hymn was In Christ Alone which has had a tremendous impact from churches world-wide and from all backgrounds, as well as being recorded on numerous live worship albums, choral projects and by artists including Newsboys, Geoff Moore with Benjamin Gate’s Adrienne Lieschburg and Margaret Becker.

Since In Christ Alone, they have written a number of others which are becoming increasingly popular in churches such as My Heart Is Filled With Thankfulness, See What A Morning and Jesus Is Lord. Currently they are co-writing a cycle of modern hymns for congregations based on the Apostles’ Creed.

With the more hymnlike approach Keith believes congregations at all stages of development can appeal to all ages through these songs, that they can teach more profoundly Christian truths, and that they can potentially re-use them for years.

He has also written a number of other projects for Kingsway Music including two collections of songs and solos, the children’s worship musical Window on the World and in last two years been involved in worship music again through his production company. This includes producing (Brennan/Becker/Hogg) and orchestrating (Matt Redman, Martin Smith and Graham Kendrick). He has also written on how to incorporate the use of strings in churches.
