“One man's incredible story of faith, hope and forgiveness in the Burundian Civil War”
Theodore Mbazumutima,Theo for short, lived a life like no other. Forced to flee his home country of Burundi in Great Lakes area of East Africa, Theo escaped the dangers of a civil war that was tearing his home apart. After the death of Hutu President Ndadaye, the Hutus and Tutsis found themselves spilling over into a conflict that was tearing Burundi apart.
All through this, through Theo’s dangerous escape, through encounters with mobs who wanted to kill him, through hunger and refugee camps and struggling to find courage, there is a God who provides for Theo in amazing ways. My Country Wept is as much an account of God’s provision as it is an amazing story of forgiveness and fleeing.
Theo soon finds himself in a place of safety, where he can study theology, but not long after feels God calling him back home to Burundi. To a place he barely made out alive.
Placing his trust in God, Theo creates REMA Ministries, an organization that exists to help those like Theo. Those who lost everything in the conflict, who are need of hope and provisions.
My Country Wept isn’t just the story of fleeing home. It’s a story of trusting God, of holding close to hope, and of being a voice for peace in a land of war. The story of Theodore Mbazumutima is a challenge to all of us to keep out eyes on God, to trust him in whatever life throws at us, and to look for where God can move today.
This is the story of Theo, who left his home, and came back to bring hope in the darkest of times.
