About This paperback

In 2000, supported by a grant from the Millennium Commission, 16 British teachers accompanied workers from CAFOD (the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) into four developing countries to experience life there and visit development projects. Tony Castle was one of those teachers and the country he visited was Bangladesh. The people he met are the special people of this book.
All but one of the 17 assemblies included here are based upon an actual person with very real problems or successes to record. Through their stories, themes from the developing nations are explored: fair trade, migration to the cities, relief work, tribal people, trafficking in women and children, safe water and sanitation, abandoned and street children, education and training, the rights of women, caste, small businesses, human rights, self-respect.
The assemblies, which include a Bible reading and prayer, are ready to use with very little additional preparation needed, although the material is flexible and can be adapted as required by assembly leaders. Section B includes more information on each topic - fact files and newspaper reports, for example - giving an opportunity to extend the assembly into the classroom, or vice versa.
