Making Trouble

Full Product Description

"Valerio, you're a natural born trouble-maker. Just make sure you make trouble for the right reasons." Expelled from secondary school with these words ringing in his ears, it took Greg Valerio a little while to find the right cause to devote his trouble-making skills to - but eventually he found it.

Fighting to apply fair trade standards to the jewellery business has brought him up against an industry riddled with problems. In the last fifteen years he has criss-crossed the globe, from the arctic circle of Greenland, alluvial diamond fields of Sierra Leone and equatorial gold rich rainforests of South America, in an effort to give the customer an ethically pure piece of jewellery, and to give the producers of that jewellery a fair wage and good working conditions.

Along the way, he has exposed the jewellery industry's dirty secrets: pollution, child labour, criminality, exploitation, dangerous working practices and much more. And he has passionately argued his case in boardrooms, sumptuous hotels and with government officials from Antwerp to Cape Town, to say there is another way.

Having been told it was impossible to have gold jewellery that could be certified as fairly traded from the mine to the shop, he achieved this in the UK. Founder of Cred Jewellery in 1996, he was awarded The Observer Ethical Award 2011 for Campaigner of the Year.

Making Trouble by Greg Valerio was published by Lion Hudson in September 2013 and is our 35859th best seller. The ISBN for Making Trouble is 9780745956039.

Publisher's Description

Fair trade jewellery has been around for a while - but while those crafting it worked under Fair Trade principles, the gold, silver and precious stones they were using came from some very murky places.

Small scale mining is the second biggest global employer, and many of those mines pay a pittance, forcing their workers to labour long hours in dirty and dangerous conditions - for a pittance. Informed by those in the jewellery trade that this would never change, Greg Valerio set out to prove them wrong. Fairly traded gold is now available in the UK, although the battle continues for other metals and products.

About Fairtrade CRED Jewellery

In 1996 Greg started CRED Jewellery the pioneering fine jewellery company. Cred Jewellery was the UK and Europe’s first jewellery company to retail fair trade green gold and platinum jewellery collections. His stated aim within the jewellery sector is;

“To make it culturally unacceptable to sell an item of jewellery that is not independently certified as socially and environmentally responsible”.

Some of the highlights of his work has been the publication in 2003 of ‘Towards an Ethical Jewellery Business’, the introduction in 2004 of fully certified green gold wedding rings to the UK in partnership with Oro Verde. In 2008 CRED Sources was established as a bullion platform for fair trade and recycled metals.

In 2009 launched the worlds first high street jewellery boutique in Chichester (UK) that is fully traceable and recycled across all its jewellery collections. In September of the same year with social objectives of the business achieved he left CRED Jewellery with the aim of returning to his advocacy and campaigning roots to continue to catalyse the broader movement for certified fair trade jewellery both in the UK and internationally.
