Life Conquers Death
Full Product Description
Each chapter moves us one step along the path, and we’re also guided by the author’s metaphors of wood, trees, and the cross of Christ as we travel.
We start in the garden of Eden, and end at the Tree of Life in the New Jerusalem.
Along the way, we encounter biblical passages, pictures by Rembrandt, and insights from such great works of Russian literature as “A Tree Falls in Siberia” as the author brings important questions to our attention.
John Arnold has created a series of contemplative readings that will remain with the reader long after reading them.

Life Conquers DeathJohn Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
The author is Dean Emeritus of Durham Cathedral. He was asked to write this book by the Archbishop of Canterbury who provides the foreword. It is based on addresses, retreats and sermons given over many years in different parts of the world. Although it is primarily a book for the Lenten season, it is pertinent for any time of the year. Arnold explores in each chapter the story of God’s love for mankind, from the Garden of Eden to the Crucifixion. He examines scripture, painting, poetry, and in particular masterpieces of Russian literature, quoting extensively from Solzhenitsyn and Pasternak. In these references he illustrates the survival of the human spirit in times of stress and oppression and of redemption through suffering. Arnold’s style is articulate and readable. His insights into life, suffering and death are compelling and the conclusions are inspiring.
