About This paperback
This is a helpful introduction to an important First Century historian. It concentrates on how his writings relate to the New Testament, so often confirming its history and sometimes illuminating its context and some of its characters, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees and the family of the Herods. Oliver Barclay
"Josephus was a first century Jew living in Jerusalem during most of the events recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. He was a younger contemporary of Paul. During his lifetime Luke, John, Peter, Paul and other Christians were writing the books and letters later brought together to form the New Testament. Josephus was not a Christian, but he knew about John the Baptist and Jesus, referring to them in his books with remarkable respect and observing that "The tribe of Christians is with us to this day." He was a man of action and a talented historian, describing in detail the terrible struggle between the Romans and the Jews in which he himself played so significant a role.
"His account of social and political conditions, of religious Jews and dominant Romans, confirms what the New Testament has to tell us. More than twenty of the prominent people mentioned in the first five books of the New Testament figure on a greater scale in the histories of Josephus, from Herod the Great to Felix and Festus, including such women as Herodias, Bernice and Drusilla. So his books are a unique companion to the New Testament, showing it to be a genuine product of that far away, yet hugely influential era.
"No other writer can compare with Josephus. He was right there, where Jesus had just been, on the lake and in the hills, at Cana and Capernaum, beside the Jordan, at the pool of Siloam and on the Mount of Olives. We can be thankful that he miraculously survived his adventurous youth and won through to a long retirement in Rome, which enabled him to record the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem, along with much priceless data preserved by no one else."
