Lesson points:
The life of Joseph was remarkable! From the beginning to the end of his story, Joseph displays a ‘Christ-like’ character which carried
him graciously and bravely through the many trials and difficulties he experienced. This first part of the story deals with 17 year old
Joseph and the difficult home situation he was growing up in. (Spiritual application: Many of the children we teach will come from
troubled homes - Joseph is a great example of how to rise above our problems). The background was complicated - his father
Jacob had 2 wives. His older brothers were children of Bilhah and Zilpah (hand maidens of Jacob’s wives) and Leah, but Joseph was
the firstborn son of Rachel, the wife he loved more than Leah. Having a favorite child is wrong - Jacob should have known better -
his grandfather Abraham favored Isaac over Ishmael, his father Isaac favored Esau over him and now he favored his son Joseph
over his brothers - the result....? He put Joseph into a situation where he was deeply resented and hated by his jealous brothers.
Joseph, with simple honesty and open sense of duty reported to Jacob about his brothers bad behavior, and this along with the
gift to Joseph of his special coat would have enraged them. But Joseph’s dreams were the final straw! Firstly Joseph dreamed that
his sheaf of corn stood upright and all his brothers’ sheaves bowed round about his - then he dreamed the sun, moon and 11 stars
(representing his father, mother* and brothers) worshipped him - Jacob rebuked Joseph for that claim. (*Note: Rachel had died
giving birth to Joseph’s younger brother Benjamin - in v 10 when Jacob mentions the word ‘mother’ he is referring to Leah who
had taken on that role.) The brothers grew in jealousy and began to make plans to get rid of the brother who they seen as spoilt
and boastful. (Spiritual application: In actual fact, Joseph was merely revealing what God had revealed to him in prophetic visions -
all would become clear in the future when his parents and brothers WOULD bow down to him). Of even more significance, since
Joseph is a "picture" of Christ, the dreams where a prophecy that just as Joseph would become pre-eminent, so Christ would
become pre-eminent in both the terrerstial sphere (dream of sheaves) and the celestial sphere (dream about sun, moon, stars).
"that in all things he might have the pre-eminence" (Col 1:18), "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name
which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things
under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Phil 2:9-11) Just as
Joseph was destined for exaltation and glory, so Christ, despite the general rejection of the world today, will one day be recognised
by every creature as Lord of all. Jacob kept the claims of Joseph in his mind and pondered them...what if they were true?
