John Howard Yoder: Spiritual WritingsJohn Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
Yoder was a Mennonite theologian in the Anabaptist tradition of seeing spirituality at the centre of life and of suffering love as the inspiration of living. In this book Yoder’s life is examined - his education, his work in children’s homes and with stranded children in France after the collapse of Nazism, his marriage and family, his pacifist convictions and his struggle for social justice. Yoder took a broad, ecumenical view of Christianity, rejecting the narrowness and exclusivity of many Protestant denominations. The failures in his personal life and the scandals of his extra-marital affairs are briefly touched upon in order to give a more rounded portrait of the man. What comes out clearly in the selection of his spiritual writings which follow is his appeal to replace hostility with forgiveness and to establish an alternative to a society based on greed and violence. He was a man of broad vision well worth getting to know better.
