John Henry NewmanJ.Nicholas Latham, via The Good Book Stall
'He always prized dogma, but as a Catholic he championed freedom in theology as well, because he was aware of the threat posed by dogmatic fundamentalism' (p. 41). This is an example of the useful, and accurate, generalisations used by Mgr Strange in an excellent account of the life, thinking and influence of John Henry Newman - not least, upon the author. He succeeds in his aim that '...those who have time to read one book about Newman will find that this is the one' (p. xii). Included are chapters on papal Infallibility, Mary, the search for Christian unity, 'Preaching a Living Faith', being a 'Witness to Holiness' and, to end, 'the vision of divine love', 'which guided Newman's life' (p. 158) explored in 'The Dream of Gerontius'. An outline knowledge of his life is assumed. There is a brief 'Index', while a bibliography may be gleaned principally from a list of 'Abbreviations' for Newman's publications, and from notes within the text. The cover photo of a relaxed Father Newman by R.W.Thruff is the best advertisement for this welcome book.
