Jesus Christ; The Alpha and the OmegaBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
This helpful book by the Principal of Spurgeon’s Baptist College is the BRF Lent book for 2011. What is different about a ‘Lent book’? It could be read at any other time, of course. But if we take Lent seriously as a time for thought and discipline about our faith, then we may feel it’s appropriate to get our head round some serious reading, too. Authors and publishers seem to work on that assumption, judging by the number and variety of Lent books that appear every year.
Nigel Wright pursues an extensive theological journey in two parts in his Lent book, with a New Testament passage and key verse for each day. The first part will help us to ‘explore the whole scope of the career of Christ’, following the ‘whole journey that God in Christ has traveled for the sake of human beings’. The heading of that part is ‘A Journey of Discovery’, while the second, shorter but no less important part has the title ‘A Journey of Discipleship’, and deals with the events of Holy Week and Easter. The understanding of Christ you will find here is unashamedly in accordance with basic mainstream Christian convictions on Christ as truly human and fully divine. There may be nothing startlingly new, but I found the chapters on such topics as the Ascension, the Final Judgment and Christ’s eternal intercession particularly helpful.
This will be nourishing reading for Lent (or any other time, for that matter!), enhancing your appreciation of the cosmic Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, the risen and exalted Lord, and – as the author puts it in his introduction – ‘renewing our love for Christ and our response in gratitude to Him’.
