A Journey Towards Christ-Centred Community.
An exploration surrounding the issues of being church in the twenty-first century, and a journey toward a community that is inclusive, messy, honest, purposeful, generous, vulnerable, sustainable, and diverse. Many people today believe that churches are simply out of touch with reality at best, or judgmental and exclusive at worst. And yet the Jesus we serve is seen to be
forgiving, wise, generous, and gracious. Why is there such a disconnection?
Steve Chalke seeks to reclaim the true heartbeat of the church; the passion to save not itself, but the world. In a work that is rooted in deep theology while being highly practical, he outlines a church whose mission and outlook is fully rooted in its understanding of a loving, welcoming God. A church that is inclusive, welcoming all people. A church that is purposeful, marked by a mission to equip its members in their frontline work. A church that is generous, vulnerable, and sustainable. What we need today is an intelligent church, not cerebral or intellectual, but rather a joined up and authentic church that makes sense of both the Bible and of life.

Contemplative activists - Endlessly restless from Perth
Intelligent church, intelligent book. The sub-title (A Journey Towards Christ-Centred Community) describes what the book is about – and what our churches should be about. Chalke quotes Phil Wall stating that we are ‘called to be contemplative activists’. I suspect that most Christian churches in the UK are likely to be comfortable with either half of that description, but bringing them together? If we’re honest that’s very uncomfortable. Whatever situation your church is in I’d be astonished if you didn’t find something in this book that makes you wince. The ‘ouch’ factor is high. The chapter headings alone will serve to identify gaps in our mission – intelligent, inclusive, messy, honest, purposeful, generous, vulnerable, political, diverse, dependent, transforming church. If you think that your church is able to model Christ in each of these areas, don’t bother to read this book – although you might want to have a look at the chapter on honest church! It’s well worth reading – although expect to be challenged. Whether you change – is up to you.
