God, The Poet & The DevilBarry Vendy, via The Good Book Stall
Robbie Burns was born in Ayrshire, in 1759 (another big anniversary celebration in 2009. Perhaps ‘Burns Night’ will be a bit extra-special this January). I knew nothing about Burns when I started reading, not even the words of ‘Auld Lang Syne’! I’m ashamed to be ignorant of one of our greatest poets! Donald Smith’s book has taught me all I know, and has spurred me on to find out more. He considers Burns’ poetry, his political concerns, his Christian faith and attitude to organised religion, and his controversial, and seemingly contradictory, love affairs. The book is full of extracts from Burns’ verse, with helpful translations of some of the difficult Scottish words. While Burns was no model of perfection, Smith commends him for showing what it means to be ‘fully human in a contradictory world’.
