Fidelity Without FundamentalismAlexandra Irvine, via The Good Book Stall
In the introduction to his book Gerard Hughes points out that fundamentalism is not a synonym for terrorism, nor should it be thought of as pertaining to any particular creed. He goes on to argue that faithfulness to the original tenets of Christianity may be maintained while avoiding a fundamentalist, literal approach to the translations and interpretations of scripture. This way of dealing with ancient texts he considers to be misleading, confusing and sometimes unintelligible. He gives examples of problems and misunderstandings that arise from this fundamentalist approach. These include evolution, ecumenism, the reality of the Holy Eucharist, pacifism, and the ordination of women. He suggests that good translation skills and sound teaching which take account of the mores of ever-evolving humankind and of the variety of world cultures, is the best way of keeping the faith and of avoiding the dangers inherent in fundamentalism. This thought-provoking book well merits the careful reading it demands.
