Fast and Feast
Fast and Feast by John Cox was published by Kevin Mayhew in October 2008 and is our 21182nd best seller. The ISBN for Fast and Feast is 9781848670785.
Lent is traditionally a time of fasting. All too easily we can see fasting in negative terms – of things given up. Alongside what we give up, we should consider what we should increase. It is part of the Lenten preparation that there is both repentance and confession, but also renewal and commitment.
This set of daily Lenten meditations suggests both things to give up and things to take on, whether as part of a daily time of personal reflection and prayer, or as part of a Lent study group. To make use of it will itself be something of a Lenten discipline; a fast from other activities, even for a short time. It also offers also nourishment for hearts, minds and souls.
For each of the forty seven days, there are Bible verses, quotations and Cox's own prayers mixed in with Cox's musings.
From The Four Loaves by C. S. Lewis:
Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like love. It has no survival value, rather it is one of those things that give value to survival.
One of Cox's prayers:
Almighty God,
whose Spirit of Truth speaks through
prophets and poets, seers and scientists,
artists and musicians,
the elderly wise and the imaginative young,
you speak to us most clearly through your Son.
Grant us courage to walk in his way,
the way of steadfast love, the way of truth.
Amen.
