Eyes of the Heart
Full Product Description
More than a book on photographic technique, Eyes of the Heart: Photography as a Christian Contemplative Practice is about cultivating photography as a spiritual practice. Adapting the monastic practice of lectio divina (sacred reading) into a form of visio divina (sacred seeing), spiritual director and Benedictine oblate Christine Valters Paintner invites readers to a new way of viewing the world—through the lens of a camera.
Paintner guides readers through six themes connecting the medium of photography with the Christian spiritual life. Each theme provides a photographic journey in which the reader does not simply take images, but receives images and learns to see with “the eyes of the heart” (Eph 1:18). Photos by the author are included.
Eyes of the Heart by Christine Valters Paintner was published by Ave Maria Press in April 2013 and is our 36456th best seller. The ISBN for Eyes of the Heart is 9781933495545.

Eyes of the HeartMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
If you are a photographer, be it amateur or professional, and a Christian then this book is for you. Written by the author of The Artist's Rule it is a well thought out and articulated book that blends together the art of photography with the spirituality of contemplative practice in a way that makes you think deeper about both. Using the camera as both tool and focus this book guides you on a journey into both the art of photography with its focus on image, light, reflection, exploration and composition and also on the way in which these practices in many ways reflect upon and can represent the inner focus and attention of contemplative action. Through the lens we focus on detail framed within the whole, and so through contemplation we focus on the whole in the detail too. Amazing metaphors are drawn out and suddenly a day out with the camera is instead a day of active prayer and contemplation the likes of which you probably hadn't fully realised before. A brilliant book and one I highly recommend for any photographer.
