Etty HillesumMelanie Carroll, via The Good Book Stall
This is a touching and wonderful book that tells the story of a strong and deeply insightful young woman who lived her life openly and with courage until her death in 1943 at Auschwitz. It stands as a wonderful companion piece to Anne Frank's Diary, because both are the stories of a young Jew’s journey to Auschwitz, but they tell differing stories, one of the hidden and the other of living in the open in a time of great fear and persecution. No less afraid, no less strong and no less questioning, this book and the life of Etty Hillesum is not only a testimony to strength of courage but of the growth of the spirit and the journey of the soul that leads in some way to self acceptance, and yes even forgiveness. This book is essential reading, and it is easy to read so good for youth as well as adults, especially suitable for reading in the lead up to Holocaust Memorial Day or for a study or consideration of violence, evil and how we can overcome it. A beautiful book indeed.
