Encountering ScriptureDiane Morrison, via The Good Book Stall
The blurb claims that this book is aimed at “the general reader” – the general reader apparently being a sceptic comfortable with such terms as “anachronistic consonance”. The author, prolific but previously unknown to me, is a theoretical physicist-turned-Anglican priest and still bows to “academically respectable argument”. Despite sixty years of Bible reading he does not believe that Scripture is necessarily “God-breathed” or the gospels an accurate account of Jesus’ life and words. If you can accommodate this attitude, you will find many incidents in the Bible that you may have wondered about but felt it sacrilegious to question head on and, whether or not you agree with John Polkinghorne’s conclusions, his exposition will certainly help you to decide what you do think. Scripture is, however, assessed only by the yardstick of human knowledge, and learned academic knowledge at that, with no balancing acceptance that our Creator’s thoughts and ways are infinitely superior to ours and not always understandable, nor any allowance for Spiritual insight, nor admission that the Bible speaks clearly to all levels of intellect. An interesting book, but best read with Matthew 11:25-26 firmly in mind.
