Elim
A Chicago Christian School and Life Training Center for the Disabled
Description
Founded in 1948 by the Dutch Reformed community of Chicago, Elim Christian School (recently renamed Elim Christian Services) was the first Reformed school to serve those with developmental and physical limitations. Since its inception, this unique institution has been an "oasis in the desert of disability" for more than 5,000 persons, ages three to sixty-five. Elim remains the only Reformed residential school in North America for special needs children, while its workshop, Oasis Enterprises, trains and employs nearly two hundred adults after they have "aged out" of school. The first book to recount the history of this special place from its beginning in a church basement through its rise to national prominence, Robert Swierenga's Elim provides an in-depth look at special education and the impact of public policy on faith-based institutions in America. Nearly 200 photographs and illustrations bring to life the story of this remarkable, inspiring community.
