Doing GodJohn Shepherd, via The Good Book Stall
Mark D Chapman, author of the acclaimed and widely discussed Blair’s Britain has now virtually written ‘Brown’s Britain’ continuing his attacks on the labour government’s thinking on the community and Brutishness and shows how for several years church leaders have colluded with or failed to challenge the approaches to pluralism, and multi-culturisim. A very hard hitting book, with such comments as, “Public expression of religion is unacceptable to the Media,” “Is Politics the Grandchild of Religion?”and similarly States that Anglicism ceased in the 1960’s.
“There can be no meaningful revival of community and participatory democracy without significant levels of devolution. An analogy that might mean something to Anglican Churchgoers is; the disembowelling of local government is like putting Bishops in control of local churches and at the same time removing Synods and PCC’s”
In this provocative book Chapman argues for a completely new approach. Instead of promoting nebulous ideas such as “community cohesion” the churches should demand social policies that will re-invigorate society at the grass roots level. His proposed system for achieving this will not be to every reader’s agreement but his comments on the churches position are very thought provoking. Chapman draws on Rowan Williams thoughts about pluralism but understands Christianity less in terms of fellowship and community and more in terms of justice and mercy, ideas which apply to all- Christian and non Christian alike.
A very thought provoking book well worth reading, that will certainly make you think about what is happening in Britain at present.
