Commentary on GalatiansGuest reviewer, via The Good Book Stall
Besides the Bible, John Bunyan preferred Luther's classic Commentary on Galatians ‘before all books I have ever seen.’ It is considered a timeless exposition of Paul's central thought in Galatians: ‘The just shall live by faith.’
Martin Luther (1483-1546) left his comfortable upbringing to become a Roman Catholic monk and later a professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg in Saxony. His study and teaching of the Greek text of the New Testament represents the beginning of modern textual study, and his widely disseminated writings sparked the Protestant Reformation in Europe.
This may all sound rather highbrow but in his Commentary on Galatians Luther writes with passion and emphasis such that his train of thought is easy to follow. He has a quaint turn of phrase that can turn the most difficult of doctrinal passages around so that it is easily understood with new insight. His method of commenting on each verse but also stepping aside at times to give further notes on specific subjects is helpful in gaining a clear and holistic picture of theEpistle to the Galatians. This book may have been written more than 500 years ago but it is uncannily relevant to current times. I am confident that any lay person could pick up this book and benefit, and certainly it would enrich the ministry of many preachers.
