Christ or Hitler?
Full Product Description
In Christ or Hitler, Christian Puritz relates the faith and fortitude of German pastor, Wilhelm Busch, through two world wars with heart-warming and challenging autobiographical anecdotes. This valuable collation of material is translated and presented highlighting the very deliberate choices between Christianity and The Third Reich made – at considerable cost, by the Lutheran pastor under the slogan, “Jesus our destiny”.
Born in Elberfeld in 1897, Wilhelm Busch was a son of pastor Dr. Wilhelm Busch and his mother, Johanna (née Kullen). After graduating he served with the German army as a young officer-lieutenant in World War I, coming to faith following the death of a comrade.
After the war he studied protestant theology in Tübingen going onto serve six months as vicar to the Lutheran Church of Gellershagen near Bielefeld, In 1924 he became a pastor in Essen with an evangelistic Christian ministry to local miners. In 1929 he became youth pastor in the Christian youth centre, later called Weigle-Haus while also preaching evangelising sermons all over Germany and abroad.
His uncompromising stance with the German Confessing Church against the influence of the Third Reich and his refusal to refrain from teaching the Bible earned him several arrests and lengthy prison sentences.
After World War II he renewed his activities as a youth pastor and evangelist with the slogan “Jesus our destiny”. Busch died in hospital in Lübeck in 1966. The funeral was attended by the later President of the Federal Republic of Germany Gustav Heinemann who gave the oration.

The name of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is very well known as a Christian who stood up to Hitler. But there were others, too, such as Busch, who refused to be silent before the German leader in the face of all that was going on in Germany at that time.
Dr Greg Livingstone says that this book 'is a deeply moving exemplary account of an ordinary pastor of ordinary Germans, striving to be faithful to their Lord Jesus Christ during Germany's darkest days'. Here, in the face of great hardship, is an account of a man so in love with Christ and his gospel. As Nigel Faithful observes, it is an encouragement to Christians to 'make a stand for the truth when under pressure, and can also be given to those yet to discover the Saviour'.
Christian Puritz, who compiled and translated this work, was born in Berlin in 1941, but moved to London in 1948. He was converted during his studies at Oxford and went on to gain a PhD at Glasgow. He married Cynthia in 1986 and lives in High Wycombe, where he taught maths at the Royal Grammar School and is now involved in working with the Asian community.

'Wilhelm Busch was an evangelical Lutheran pastor in the German Pietist tradition. He lived through the entire period of Hitler’s vicious tyranny and lived to tell the tale. Although he wrote several books recording interesting events, he never wrote a Memoir, and did not wish anybody to write his biography. Therefore this book is not the consecutive story of his life, but an expertly translated series of episodes extracted from his writings and organised chronologically. 'May it edify all who read it.' - Don Stephens, author and historian, Liverpool
'This is an enthralling book of the experiences of the German pastor Wilhelm Busch through two world wars and times of both freedom and arrest by the Gestapo. These autobiographical anecdotes are equally heart-warming and challenging, and come infused with a love for Christ and a desire to proclaim a life-changing gospel. It will encourage believers to make a stand for truth when under pressure, and can also be given to those yet to discover the Saviour. Christian Puritz is to be congratulated for collecting this valuable material and translating it so smoothly and sympathetically for a wider readership.' - Nigel Faithfull
