Description

This Sixth Edition of the Canons of the Church of England was published in October 2000. The First Supplement to the Sixth Edition has now been published and is incorporated in this edition.

The Sixth Edition was published following amendments made to Canons No. 21, 22, 23, 25, as well as Canons H2, H3, B2 and B42.

The supporting material to the Canons was also expanded withb the publications of the Sixth Edition with the inclusion of:

(a) a full list of those forms of service which have been approved and commended as alternatives to the Book of Common Prayer;
(b) the guidelines agreed by the House of Bishops in March 1997 on the admission of baptised persons to Holy Communion before confirmation;
(c) a full list of Churches designated pursuant to the Church of England (Ecumenical Relations) Measure 1988;
(d) the list produced by the Council for Christian Unity of Churches in Communion with the Church of England.

Additional notes and cross-references were also inserted between the relevant Canons and this supporting material.

The First Supplement (issued in April 2005) contains significant revisions to over 90 pages of the Sixth Edition including:

amendments to Canons A1, H2 and H3, made as a result of the promulgation of amending Canons Nos 20 and 26;

revisions to the list of approved and commended forms of service;

new advice to clergy concerning marriage and the divorced as issued by the House of Bishops in 2002;

an updated list of Churches designated pursuant to the Church of England (Ecumenical Relations) Measure 1988;

corrections of printing errors in the Sixth Edition;

a fully revised index.
