Bread of HeavenGraham Wise, via The Good Book Stall
This hardback volume is an extensive and detailed survey of the life and ministry of William Williams, best know for his hymns, Guide me, O thou great Jehovah etc.; but not so well known as an extensive poetry-writer and theological thinker. Williams was a leader in the Welsh Evangelical Revival of the 18th century alongside Howell Harris, Daniel Rowland and others, the effective founders of Calvinistic Methodism in Wales.
Born into a humble and godly farming family in east Carmarthenshire, Williams intended to enter the medical profession but, after hearing Howell Harris preach in Talgarth churchyard, sensed a call by God to enter Christian ministry. He was never ordained but became one of the great Welsh theological thinkers, an able preacher and one of the foremost Welsh hymn-writers of his day. He was no stranger to theological controversy and saw a great revival take effect throughout Mid-Wales.
It is a fascinating story, heavy-going at times, but rewarding for the insights it gives into the origins of Evangelical Christianity in the Province and the interaction of some of the key figures involved.
