Bittersweet

Bittersweet by Cathy Marie Hake was published by Bethany House in April 2007 and is our 7217th best seller. The ISBN for Bittersweet is 9780764201660.

Laney McCain has unabashedly had her sights set on Galen O'Sullivan for years. And though Galen has treated her as nothing more than his best friend's pesky tag-along sister, Laney dares hope that now is the time he will open his eyes and truly recognize the woman she's become.
But the arrival of Ishmael and Ivy Grubb, squatters on the O'Sullivans' land, diverts Galen's attention. Though the Grubbs are crass and uneducated, Galen shows mercy and allows them to stay in exchange for help around the farm. But it becomes a decision he lives to regret....

Bittersweet, but lovely. - Wendy Sparkes, Children's Author

The tone of the story is summed up in the title. Nevertheless it's a lovely, compelling sequel to Letter Perfect from Cathy Marie Hake that you won't want to miss. Laney McCain has been in love with Galen O'Sullivan for half of forever although he has never shown any interest in her except as his best friend's pesky little sister. Galen O'Sullivan can hardly believe it's taken him so long to wake up...Laney McCain has become a woman...(when did that happen?!)...& he's out to court her. However, things don't exactly go to plan when the Grubb family arrive & squat on his land. Galen chooses to allow them to stay & in exchange work around the house & farm. Despite this, his kindness is thrown back in his face, & his decision to let them stay becomes one he regrets. For Galen & Laney, the path to true love is truly bittersweet as they have to put aside their feelings for each other & instead reach out in love, kindness, gentleness & mercy to those who need it, even though they don't deserve it.
